EQUIPMENT FOR THE FORMATION OF SURFACE LAYERS BY MEANS OF DIRECT CURRENT AND PULSED CURRENT GLOW DISCHARGE

Chemical Vapour Deposition processes are conducive to the formation of a new solid phase on the surface of the treated object.

In the PACVD method, besides thermal activation there also takes place electrical activation of the gas medium, as well as the surface layer of the treated load. The load, which constitutes the cathode (negative pole), is placed inside a vacuum work chamber which constitutes the anode (positive pole). Next, an atmosphere composed of N2 + H2 is introduced at a pressure within the range of 0.5 – 13 hPa in a so-called dynamic vacuum, i.e. with a constant flow through the chamber, and with the application of a difference of potentials between the cathode and the anode, up to 800 V. In these conditions, abnormal glow discharge is maintained, ensuring heating of the treated load up to the required nitriding temperature. Introduction into the gaseous atmosphere of an organic compound of titanium Ti(OiC3H7)4 causes the formation over the prior nitrided substrate of a layer of Ti(NCO). Composite layers are diffusion layers and are characterized by good bonding to the substrate. They combine properties of nitrided layers (hardness, wear resistance, good fatigue strength) with those of Ti(NCO (high hardness, good corrosion resistance, low coefficient of friction, good wear resistance) which broadens their scope of applications. On account of their low temperature of formation (approx.500°C), they may be obtained on a hardened and tempered substrate. This technology enables formation of layers of any desired concentration profile of nitrogen, titanium, carbon and oxygen, as designed. Composite layers formed by the PACVD method may find application in the chemical and food producing industries.
